Explaining the New Media Policy

09/12/12 By Think Tank Productions

Earlier today Coach Sark released a new media policy, which prevents the reporting of certain things from practice, including injury statuses.

Unlike the NFL, the NCAA and Pac-12 do not have rules or regulations which guide programs on how or when to release injury information. Many teams in the Pac-12 do not allow the reporting of injuries, which can leave the teams who do at a strategic disadvantage.

“We will continue to maintain a very open culture around our program,” Coach Sark said. “But I can’t let our team be put at a competitive disadvantage.”

Sark is referring to a scenario where an opponent could gather injury and personnel information from the Huskies’ practice week which could help them game-plan a certain way.

“I hope Husky fans can understand, this is about protecting our team and giving us the best possible opportunities to be successful.”

I think it is/was the right thing to do. Don James asked the media to keep quiet about an injury, but they wrote about it anyway. SARK,you’re right on. Most of the media is not your friend.

I can understand why you are going this way, but as a whole I think the Pac 12 needs to make a decision to disclose at least practice participation.

If Player A is not playing in a game or is playing but it seems like he’s struggling as a fan it would be nice to know that Player A is dinged up and that is why he did not have a good game or why he was on the sidelines.
