Coach Sark: We’re poised for a great run

03/04/13 By Think Tank Productions

  • Husky Football is back. Coach Sark started off today’s press conference by saying that Spring Practice could not have come soon enough for him and his team. He explained that the Huskies are “chomping at the bit to get on the field and get going.” He also added (as the title of this post suggests) that he is excited for the 2013 Dawgs to get going and that he feels that this group is “poised for a great run.”
  • Coach Sark laid out some of the focal points of the buildup to the 2013 season for the Huskies. He said that players and coaches in all three phases of the game will be focusing on ball security, the ability to create explosive plays, execution in the redzone, fundamental football, and the development of leadership.
  • According to Coach Sark, out of 28 trips to the redzone, opposing offenses only turned those trips into touchdowns 14 times. Although that ranking was among tops in the conference, Coach Sark believes that the defense can continue to improve on its stinginess. He also spoke about the need to get back to the redzone supremacy that the team had on offense during the 2011 campaign. 80% of visits to the opponents’ 20 yard line ended in touchdowns for UW that year, a mark that was among the best few in the nation.
  • The Husky coaching staff is leaving no stone unturned in the quest for a championship. This year’s spring practices are at different times so that the Huskies can expand their comfort zone. Coach Sark explained that the Dawgs are great when performing within their comfort zone, and the statistics back him up. Coach Sark’s teams are 10-2 at home over the past two seasons, so now the goal is to build a broader comfort zone so that the Huskies will be ready to ball at any time of day.
  • Coach Sark pointed to the Huskies’ 2-1 record against the top three teams in the Pac-12 North as sign of the team’s progress, but also used it as a point to talk about the next step in the evolution of the program.
  • Coach Sark guaranteed that there is “zero complacency in our locker room right now,” especially after a season in which the Dawgs were a couple plays away from a 9-4 season. Coach added that this year’s roster has a great combo of motivation and talent, and said that he does not see why “we wouldn’t be in position for a division championship. I think we have the roster to take the next step.”
  • On the personnel front, Coach Sark announced that walk-on Thomas Vincent will switch from QB to safety, Taz Stevenson will move back to safety as well, and Erik Kohler will be back at the end of spring from injury.

The Huskies faced a familiar foe behind a great game up front by Alameda Ta’amu along with over 250 yards rushing from Chris Polk and Jake Locker, but the real star was the defense, as the Dawgs took home the victory.
