Tosh Lupoi was named Washington’s defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator on January, 16, 2012.  Coach Lupoi came to Washington from California where he’d spent the previous four years as defensive line coach.

Lupoi was the youngest full-time coach in Cal history when he joined the staff at the age of 26 in 2008 and remained the youngest Pac-10 coach for two additional seasons. In all, he was associated with Cal football for 12 years having spent six as a Golden Bear player (2000-05, which included an extra season due to a medical redshirt), two as a graduate assistant (2006-07) and four as defensive line coach.

Cal’s 2011 defense ranked No. 1 overall in the Pac-12 Conference. They gave a conference best 332.9 yards per game, were third in total sacks collecting 34, gave up the fewest first downs per game (17.4) and allowed the fewest passing yards per game (204.2).

Lupoi has helped develop first-round NFL Draft picks each of the last two drafts in defensive lineman Tyson Alualu and Cameron Jordan, making Cal only the second Pac-10 team to have ever had defensive linemen selected in the first round of the NFL Draft in back-to-back years.

The 2010 Rivals Recruiter of the Year has also been part of a recruiting team that has inked signing classes in 2011 and 2010 that have ranked as high as No. 11 and No. 14 nationally.

Lupoi was a defensive lineman for Cal from 2000-05. He played alongside three future NFL players, and led the Bears’ defensive line in tackles in 2003 when he was the recipient of the Ken Cotton Award as the squad’s Most Courageous Player as he played the final four games of the campaign with a broken right thumb.

Lupoi earned Pac-10 All-Academic recognition in 2005 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in American studies in 2005 and his master’s in education in 2007.

Lupoi played his high school ball at De La Salle in Concord, California, one of the top tier high school football programs in the nation.

His father, John Lupoi, played collegiately at Brigham Young and later was a part-time assistant coach at Cal.
