Odegaard award.  The Odegaard award is the only University and community selected award, and is regarded as the highest achievement in diversity by the University of Washington.  We’re extremely proud of our very own Gertrude Peoples, who was selected for the award.

Ever since she joined the UW program in 1969, Gertrude has been a magnanimous part of Husky Football.  Gertrude started the country’s first academic support office for collegiate athletics, and she also used to accompany the football coaching staff on home recruiting visits as the first female recruiter for athletics at a major university.  Gertrude was featured in both Ebony Magazine and Sports Illustrated during that time.  Gertrude experienced so much success as a recruiter that other schools called the NCAA to alter the rules, limiting home visits to just coaches.  Gertrude was also a mentor to such notable Husky Football athletes like Warren Moon, Mario Bailey, Spider Gaines and Greg Lewis.  So many Husky Legends have starred on the gridiron, but we’re lucky enough to have one right here in the Husky Football Offices!  Thank you Gertrude for everything you have given the University of Washington!

One bystander and Husky fan said that Will Shamburger “brought a huge smile to everyone he met” and that James Atoe was a huge hit with one laughing little boy. The players were thrilled to be able to paint with the kids and get away from the busy university life for an evening.
